What are adenoids?

The adenoids are a mass of soft tissue behind the nasal cavity. Like lymph nodes, adenoids are part of the immune system and are made of the same type of tissue (lymphoid tissue). White blood cells circulate through the adenoids and other lymphoid tissue, reacting to foreign invaders in the body.

We all have adenoids at birth and in childhood, but as we turn into an adolescence, it starts to shrink. By adulthood, most people's adenoids have disappeared.

The lymphatic system clears away infection and keeps body fluids in balance. The adenoids and tonsils work by trapping germs coming in through the mouth and nose.

Causes

Adenoiditis can be caused by a bacterial infection, such as infection with the bacteria Streptococcus. It can also be caused by a number of viruses, including Epstein-Barr virus, adenovirus, and rhinovirus.

Risk factors

  • Living or working in close proximity to children.

  • Living in an urban environment with more exposure to viruses or bacteria.

  • Young child or elderly adult.

  • Immunocompromised.

  • Living or working in close proximity to airborne pollutants, such as smoke.

  • Living in colder climates.

Symptoms

Symptoms of adenoiditis can vary depending on what is causing the infection, but may include:

  • sore throat

  • stuffy nose

  • swollen glands in the neck

  • ear pain and other ear problems

When the nose is stuffy, breathing through it can be a challenge. Other symptoms of adenoiditis related to nasal congestion include:

  • breathing through the mouth

  • speaking with a nasal sound, as if you are speaking with a pinched nose

  • difficulty sleeping

  • snoring or sleep apnea (a condition where you stop breathing for a short amount of time during sleep)
