ANKYLOSING SPONDYLITIS

What is Ankylosing Spondylitis?

It is an inflammatory disease. It is a rare type of arthritis that causes pain and stiffness in the spine. It is a lifelong condition, also known as Bechterew disease. "Ankylosis" means fused bones or other hard tissue. "Spondylitis" means inflammation in your spinal bones, or vertebrae. This can make your back, rib cage and neck stiff and painful.

It often starts in people who are in their late teens or 20s.

Early symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis typically begin between the ages of 15 and 30.

Most commonly, affected individuals first experience chronic back pain and stiffness. This pain worsens with rest or inactivity, and tends to be relieved with physical activity or exercise.

Causes

Ankylosing spondylitis is likely caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors, most of which have not been identified. However, researchers have found variations in several genes that influence the risk of developing this disorder. Researchers know that the HLA-B27 gene increases the risk of developing ankylosing spondylitis, but this does not mean you will get the disease if you have the gene. Many people have the gene and never develop ankylosing spondylitis, which tells researchers that environmental factors also play a role.

Researchers continue to discover many other gene variations that may cause the disease; however, HLA-B27 is the primary gene that increases your risk for developing ankylosing spondylitis.

Risk factors for ankylosing spondylitis are:

  • Age: Unlike other arthritic and rheumatic disorders, initial symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis often appear in younger adults. Symptoms often appear between ages 20 and 40.

  • Sex: Some guidance states that ankylosing spondylitis is around twice as common in males than females. However, the actual prevalence of the condition may be more even Trusted Source, according to a 2018 review.

Ankylosing spondylitis symptoms can differ between males and females, which may lead to a late or missed diagnosis.
