What are boils?

It is also known as furuncle. It hard and painful lump that fills with pus.

A boil is a skin infection that starts in a hair follicle or oil gland. It is common, painful infection of a hair follicle and the surrounding skin.

Causes

Boils are cause by staphylococcus aureus. 

A carbuncle is a cluster of boils that form a connected area of infection under the skin. Individuals who have ingrown hairs may experience a painful acne-like eruption after cut/injury.

The upper skin layers may have some dilation of the small superficial blood vessels, which gives the skin a red or flushed appearance.

Pustules and rare abscesses may form on the ingrown hair sites due to the infection with common skin bacteria, such as Staphylococcus and Pseudomonas.

Signs & Symptoms

It develops over a few hours or days. It usually starts out as a tender, swollen red bump. It may feel warm to the touch. As the boil develops, it:

• Fills with pus

• Becomes painful

• It grows in size - red bump that starts out small and can enlarge to more than 2 inches (5 centimeters)

• Swelling, redness, and pain

• A white or yellow center or tip

• Weeping, oozing, or crusting

• A fever may develop.

• Lymph nodes may become swollen.

The most common places for boils to appear are on the face, neck, armpits, shoulders, and buttocks. When one forms on the eyelid, it is called a styes.

If several boils appear in a group, this is a more serious type of infection called a carbuncle.
