What is bronchitis?
Bronchitis is an inflammation of the lining of your bronchial tubes, which carry air to and from your lungs. People who have bronchitis often cough up thickened mucus, which can be discolored. Bronchitis may be either acute or chronic.
Often developing from a cold or other respiratory infection, acute bronchitis is very common. Chronic bronchitis, a more serious condition, is a constant irritation or inflammation of the lining of the bronchial tubes, often due to smoking.
Acute bronchitis, also called a chest cold, usually improves within a week to 10 days without lasting effects, although the cough may linger for weeks.
However, if you have repeated bouts of bronchitis, you may have chronic bronchitis, which requires medical attention. Chronic bronchitis is one of the conditions included in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Causes
Usually, acute bronchitis is brought on by a viral infection, though it may also be caused by a bacterial infection. The flu and colds are examples of viral infections.
Chronic bronchitis is usually, but not always, caused by smoking tobacco. It can also be caused by exposure to secondhand cigarette smoke, air pollution, dust, or toxic gases. Your risk can be increased by family history of bronchitis, having asthma and allergies, and having gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
Risk factors
You have a higher chance of getting either kind of bronchitis if:
Smoking
Asthma and allergies.
Weaker immune system.
This is sometimes the case for older adults and people with ongoing diseases, as well as for babies and young children. Even a cold can make it more likely, since your body’s already busy fighting those germs.
Risk of getting chronic bronchitis is higher if:
Female smoker: The risk may be more than a male smoker.
Family history of lung disease.
Types
There are two types:
Acute bronchitis: This is more common. Symptoms last a few weeks, but it doesn’t usually cause problems past that time.
Chronic bronchitis: This one is more serious. It keeps coming back or doesn’t go away.
Symptoms
Symptoms of bronchitis include:
A cough that is frequent and produces mucus.
A lack of energy.
A wheezing sound when breathing (may or may not be present).
A fever (may or may not be present).
Shortness of breath.
