What is candidiasis?
It is a fungal infection caused by a yeast (a type of fungus) called Candida.
The infection it causes is called candidiasis. There are several different types of it.
Some species of Candida can cause infection in people; the most common is Candida albicans.
Site
Candida normally survives:
On the skin
inside the body, in places such as the
mouth
throat
gut
vagina
without causing any problems
Types of candidiasis
Different types of candidiasis infections are as follows:
Thrush (Oropharyngeal Candidiasis)
Genital Yeast Infection (Genital Candidiasis)
Skin candidiasis - Diaper Rash from Yeast Infection
Invasive Candidiasis
Most candida infections result in minimal complications such as redness, itching, and discomfort.
A very wide range of symptoms can be caused by the Candida infection, from the mildest and more common forms that usually affect the mouth and vagina, to the most rare and severe forms which may affect the heart or brain:
Thrush (Oropharyngeal Candidiasis) –
Creamy, white, painful patches inside the mouth
Cracking at the corners of the mouth (cheilitis)
A red, painful, smooth tongue
Candidiasis of the Skin (Oral candidiasis) – A burning rash develops. Some types of diaper rash are caused by Candida.
The lesions appear as well-circumscribed, red, sometimes itchy patches of varying sizes and shapes. The lesions are usually rimmed with small, red-based pustules and they commonly appear in folds of the skin; i.e., the underarms, under the breasts, the navel, groin or the folds of the buttocks (e.g., diaper rash), or the webbing between the toes and the fingers. Crusts may form on the scalp, possibly causing hair loss. The infection may spread to the face, fingertips or the trunk. When the area around the anus is involved, the infection is called Perianal Candidiasis.
Genital candidiasis – (Vulvovaginitis or Vaginitis/ Penis, infected by Candida) –
Vulvovaginitis - Pregnant women or women with diabetes are especially prone to this common fungal infection. It usually first appears as a thick white or yellow vaginal discharge (leucorrhoea)
with itching and redness of the female genitalia (vagina and vulva). Severe itching, burning, soreness, irritation, and a whitish or whitish-grey cottage cheese-like discharge.
Male genitalia (balanitis thrush) - it includes red skin around the head of the penis, swelling, irritation, itchiness and soreness of the head of the penis, thick, lumpy discharge under the foreskin, unpleasant odour, difficulty retracting the foreskin (phimosis), and pain when passing urine or during sex.
Invasive candidiasis –
It is an infection caused by a yeast (a type of fungus) called Candida. Unlike Candida infections in the mouth and throat (also called “thrush”) or vaginal “yeast infections,” invasive candidiasis is a serious infection that can affect the blood, heart, brain, eyes, bones, and other parts of the body. Candidemia, a bloodstream infection with Candida, is a common infection in hospitalized patients.
