What is cervical spondylosis?
It is also called cervical osteoarthritis. Cervical spondylosis is a type of degenerative disease.
It is the natural wearing down of cartilage, disks, ligaments and bones in your neck. Cervical spondylosis is extremely common. More than 85% of people over the age of 60 are affected.
Normally, soft disks between your vertebrae, the bones in your spine, provide cushioning. With cervical spondylosis, these disks become compressed.
When this happens, the cartilage that lines the vertebrae on each side of the disc, where they touch, can wear away. Once this protective cartilage is gone, spurs may develop on your vertebrae where they rub together. Nerves attached to your spinal cord may have less room to pass between the vertebrae on their way out of the spine.
This can cause your legs or hands to feel weak or clumsy.
Causes of cervical spondylosis
As the age increases, the bones and cartilages that make up your backbone and neck gradually develop wear and tear. These changes can include:
Bone spurs: These overgrowths of bone are the result of the body trying to grow extra bone to make the spine stronger. However, the extra bone can press on delicate areas of the spine, such as the spinal cord and nerves, resulting in pain.
Stiff ligaments: Ligaments are cords of tissue that connect bone to bone. Spinal ligaments can stiffen with age, making your neck less flexible.
Dehydrated spinal discs: Your spinal bones have discs between them, which are thick, pad-like cushions that absorb the shock of lifting, twisting, and other activities. The gel-like material inside these discs can dry out over time. This causes your bones (spinal vertebrae) to rub together more, which can be painful.
This process can begin to happen in your 30s.
Herniated discs: Age also affects the exterior of your spinal disks. Cracks often appear, leading to bulging (herniated) disks — which sometimes can press on the spinal cord and nerve roots.
