What is dysmenorrhea?
Dysmenorrhea is the medical term for pain with menstruation or menstrual cramps. More than half of women who menstruate have some pain for 1 to 2 days each month. Usually, the pain is mild. But for some women, the pain is so severe that it keeps them from doing their normal activities for several days a month.
In this painful menstrual period, which are caused by uterine contractions occurs.
Causes
Primary dysmenorrhea have abnormal contractions of the uterus due to a chemical imbalance in the body. For example, the chemical prostaglandin controls the contractions of the uterus.
Secondary dysmenorrhea is caused by other medical conditions, most often endometriosis. This is a condition in which endometrial tissue implants outside the uterus. Endometriosis often causes internal bleeding, infection, and pelvic pain.
Other causes of secondary dysmenorrhea include the following:
Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
Uterine fibroids
Abnormal pregnancy (miscarriage, ectopic)
Infection, tumours, or polyps in the pelvic cavity
Risk factors
Age
Smoking
Attempts to lose weight
Higher body mass index
Depression/anxiety
Earlier age at menarche
Nulliparity
longer and heavier menstrual flow
Family history of dysmenorrhea
Disruption of social networks
Symptoms
Aching pain in the abdomen (pain may be severe at times).
Feeling of pressure in the abdomen.
Pain in the hips, lower back and inner thighs.
