What is liver cirrhosis?
Cirrhosis is a late-stage liver disease in which healthy liver tissue is replaced with scar tissue and the liver is permanently damaged.
Scar tissue keeps your liver from working properly. As cirrhosis gets worse, your liver begins to fail.
Each time your liver gets hurt, it repairs itself and forms tough scar tissue. When too much scar tissue builds up, the organ can't work properly.
This scarring is permanent and is most often caused by long-term exposure to toxins such as alcohol or viral infections.
Causes
Alcohol
Hepatitis (hepatitis B, C and D)
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis
Cystic fibrosis
Poorly formed bile ducts (biliary atresia)
Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency
Inherited disorders of sugar metabolism (galactosemia or glycogen storage disease)
Genetic digestive disorder (Alagille syndrome)
Destruction of the bile ducts (primary biliary cirrhosis)
Hardening and scarring of the bile ducts (primary sclerosing cholangitis
