Ringworm

What is ringworm?

It is a common skin infection that is caused by a fungus. It is also known as dermatophytosis, dermatophyte infection, or tinea.

It is a fungus, not a worm, causes the infection. The lesion caused by this infection resembles a worm in the shape of a ring, which is why it got its name.

It is a fungi that live on the dead tissues of your skin, hair, and nails and on scalp.

When it occurs between toes, it is known as athlete’s foot. If it spreads to the groins, it is known as jock itch.


Causes

They are typically of the Trichophyton, Microspore, and Epidermophyton types.

There are three main ways that ringworm can spread:

  1. From a person who has ringworm

  2. From an animal that has ringworm

  3. From the environment

  4. Infected Objects to humans

  5. Infected soils to humans

Risk Factors

Anyone can get ringworm, but you may be more at risk if they have:

  • have obesity or are overweight

  • use public showers or locker rooms

  • come in close contact with animals

  • wear tight shoes or clothes that chafe your skin

  • have diabetes

  • sweat excessively

  • have a weakened immune system

  • Live in a warm climate

  • Have close contact with an infected person or animal


Types 

  1. Scalp ringworm (tinea capitis)

  2. Body (skin) ringworm (tinea corporis)

  3. Groin infections (tinea cruris)

  4. Tinea pedis

  5. Tinea unguium (in nails or nail bed)

  6. Ringworm in the beard area 

Sign & Symptoms

The telltale sign is a red, scaly patch or bump those itches. Over time, the bump turns into a ring- or circle-shaped patch. It may turn into several rings. The inside of the patch is usually clear or scaly. The outside might be slightly raised and bumpy.

Ringworm on your scalp tends to start out as a bump or small sore. It may turn flaky and scaly, and your scalp may feel tender and sore to the touch. You may notice that your hair starts to fall out in patches.

It includes:

  • A scaly ring-shaped area, typically on the buttocks, trunk, arms and legs

  • Itchiness

  • A clear or scaly area inside the ring, perhaps with a scattering of bumps whose color ranges from red on white skin to reddish, purplish, brown or gray on black and brown skin

  • Slightly raised, expanding rings

  • A round, flat patch of itchy skin

  • Overlapping rings

Ringworms are contagious:

  2.  Keep clean

  3.  Stay cool and dry

  4.  Avoid infected animals

  5.  Don't share personal items
