SLIPPED DISC

What is Slipped disc?

It refers to an intervertebral disc of the spine that has lost its normal shape and/or consistency. The altered shape occurs when the disc soft inner material bulges or leaks out of its external fibrous covering.

The disc act as buffers between your bones, allowing you to bend and move with ease. When one of these disc tears or leaks, it’s called a herniated disk

It’s one of the most common causes of neck, back and leg pain.

Causes

It is still unknown why some people develop a 'slipped' (prolapsed) disc and not others, even when they do the same job or lift the same sort of objects. It seems that some people may have a weakness in the outer part of the affected disc. Various things may trigger the inner softer part of the disc to squeeze out through the weakened outer part of the disc. In people with a weakness in a disc, this may be sufficient to cause a prolapse. Factors that may increase the risk of developing a prolapsed disc include:

  • Heavy lifting.

  • Sedentary lifestyle (sitting for long hours, especially driving).

  • Weight-bearing sports (weightlifting, etc).

  • Smoking.

  • Being overweight (obesity).

  • Increasing age (a disc is more likely to develop a weakness as we become older).

Symptoms

Most herniated disks occur in the lower back, but they can also occur in the neck. Signs and symptoms depend on where the disk is situated and whether the disk is pressing on a nerve. Herniated disks usually affect one side of the body.

  • Arm or leg pain. If your herniated disk is in your lower back, besides pain in your lower back, you'll typically feel pain in your buttocks, thigh and calf. You might have pain in part of the foot as well.

For a herniated disk in your neck, you'll typically feel the most pain in your shoulder and arm. This pain might shoot into your arm or leg when you cough, sneeze or move into certain positions. Pain is often described as sharp or burning.

  • Numbness or tingling. People who have a herniated disk often have radiating numbness or tingling in the body part served by the affected nerves.

  • Weakness. Muscles served by the affected nerves tend to weaken. This can cause you to stumble, or affect your ability to lift or hold items.
