What is uterine fibroid?
Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths of the uterus that often appear during childbearing years. Also called leiomyomas or myomas or uterine myomas or fibromas.
These growths made up of the muscle and connective tissue from the wall of the uterus. These growths are usually benign.
Uterine fibroids aren't associated with an increased risk of uterine cancer.
Uterine Fibroids are actually a very common type of growth in your pelvis. Approximately 40 to 80% of women have fibroids. However, many women don’t experience any symptoms from their fibroids, so they don’t realize they have fibroids.
Causes
The exact causes of fibroids are still unknown.
Most fibroids happen in women of reproductive age. They typically aren’t seen in young women who haven’t had their first period yet. But research and clinical experience point to these factors:
Genetics: Researchers have found genetic differences between fibroids and normal cells in the uterus.
Hormones: Oestrogen and progesterone, two hormones that stimulate development of the uterine lining during each menstrual cycle in preparation for pregnancy, appear to promote the growth of fibroids.
Fibroids contain more oestrogen and progesterone receptors than typical uterine muscle cells do. Fibroids tend to shrink after menopause due to a decrease in hormone production.
Other growth factors: Substances in your body that help with tissue upkeep, such as insulin-like growth factor, may play a part in fibroid growth.
Extracellular matrix (ECM): ECM is increased in fibroids and makes them fibrous. ECM also stores growth factors and causes biologic changes in the cells themselves.
Risk Factors
Age
Race
Early menarche
Birth control use
Vitamin D deficiency
Eating too much red meat and not enough green vegetables, fruit, or dairy
Alcohol
Family history
Types
The type of fibroid a woman develops depends on its location in or on the uterus.
Intramural fibroids:
Intramural fibroids are the most common type of fibroid. These types appear within the muscular wall of the uterus. Intramural fibroids may grow larger and can stretch your womb.
Subserosal fibroids:
Subserosal fibroids form on the outside of your uterus, which is called the serosa. They may grow large enough to make your womb appear bigger on one side.
Pedunculated fibroids:
Subserosal tumours can develop a stem, a slender base that supports the tumour. When they do, they’re known as pedunculated fibroids.
Submucosal fibroids:
These types of tumours develop in the middle muscle layer, or myometrium, of your uterus. Submucosal tumours aren’t as common as the other types.
Symptoms
Many women who have fibroids are asymptomatic. In those that do, symptoms can be influenced by the location, size and number of fibroids.
In women who have symptoms, the most common signs and symptoms of uterine fibroids include:
Heavy menstrual bleeding
Menstrual periods lasting more than a week
Pelvic pressure or pain
Frequent urination
Difficulty emptying the bladder
Constipation
Backache or leg pains
