WHAT IS PSORIASIS?


Psoriasis is an auto-immune, chronic, inflammatory disorder. It is non-contagious which is characterized by red patches with whitish-silver scales, over the skin, causing itching and burning sensation. 


Psoriasis is a common skin condition, which affects about 2% of the population in the UK.

This condition can occur in both men and women equally, and it usually affects individuals below the age of 35. The intensity and severity of psoriasis can vary from person to person with some cases presenting with just a minor itch. The episodes of psoriasis alternate with periods of remission.




WHERE DOES PSORIASIS DEVELOPS?


These scales typically develop on joints, such as elbows and knees.

They may develop anywhere on the body, including the: hands, feet, neck, scalp, face, nails, mouth & areas around genitals.

  • Plaque Psoriasis: Plaque psoriasis or also called psoriasis Vulgaris, is said to be the most common psoriasis found. 


It appears as thick red patches on the skin, often with a silver or white scaly layer. 


The site of these patches are elbows, knees, lower back, and scalp.



  • Scalp Psoriasis: Scalp psoriasis affects over 60% of people living with psoriasis. 


Scalp psoriasis can affect the hairline, the forehead, the back of the neck, and the skin in and around the ears.



  • Pustular Psoriasis: Pustular psoriasis may appear as inflamed or reddened skin. 


Pustular psoriasis may appear only on certain areas of the body, such as the hands and feet, or it may cover most of the body.










                 

  • Erythrodermic Psoriasis: Erythrodermic psoriasis is rare, affecting about 2% of people living with psoriasis. 


This type of psoriasis can cause intense redness and shedding of skin layers in large sheets. 


It often affects nearly the whole body and can be life-threatening.



  • Guttate Psoriasis: Signs of guttate psoriasis include small, round, red spots caused by inflammation.


Guttate psoriasis often appears on the arms, legs, and torso; however, it can affect any area of the body.

  • Scaly skin patches, which may get worse when joint pain flares up

  • Nail Pitting

  • Separation of your nail from the nail bed

  • Eye Redness

  • Eye Pain (uveitis)

  • Itching, burning, or soreness

  • Dry skin (May cause bleeding while itching)

  • Fatigue

  • Flaky Scalp

  • Morning stiffness

  • Swollen fingers and toes

  • Painful muscles and tendons
